Dexter - top quarter Castle: Colours Or on Azure background
This is the symbol of old Castile in Spain, homeland of Manuel's forebears.

Dexter - lower quarter Olive Twig: Colours Vert on Argent background
Represents not only Manuel Josef's historic olive tree at Port Awanui, but also acknowledges the book "Olive Branches" which documents the José family.

Sinister Poutama Pattern: Colours Or on Sanguine background
This acknowledges the Ngati Porou wives and descendents of Manuel Josef and occupies the most important place on the shield. Depicted in the colours of the Spanish flag this pattern, with its significance of education, advancement, striving, planning and progress as a clear message for all descendents.

Legend Shield: Colours Or on Vert background
"Adelante Para Siempre" not only acknowledges the family's unique Spanish heritage but with its message of "Forward Forever" upholds that of the Poutama pattern.

Legend Ribbon: Colours Or on Vert background
"Te Whanau a Manuera o Waiapu" the family belonging to Manuel of Waiapu.
